In September last year, Bulgaria competed in the Olympic qualification tournament but failed to qualify, being surpassed in the group only by Peru, despite there being eight teams in the group.

In the last edition of the Nations League, the Netherlands finished just short of the playoff zone, missing out by only two points. During that tournament, they defeated Bulgaria 3-0, a result they repeated at the European Championship where they went on to claim the bronze medal. However, they did not secure a spot in the Olympic tournament. In their group, they finished fifth, with only two points separating them from the second-place team. Last week, the Netherlands played two five-set friendly matches against Poland. They lost the first match but emerged victorious in the second one with a score of 3-2.
